Is it safe to drive a car with a broken axle?

The thing still runs, but the mechanic said it has a broken axle. Is it safe to be driving?
I’ve not heard of a car with a broken axle being able to run. Maybe he meant the part that attaches the axle to the frame. If it drives, drive it slowly to the garage and have it fixed.
